State Doctorate (Habilitation) in Mathematics
The Habilitation is the highest academic qualification a person can achieve by his own pursuit in Germany. Earned after taking a doctorate, the habilitation requires the candidate to write a second dissertation, reviewed by and defended in front of an academic committee in a process similar to that for the doctoral dissertation. Through the habilitation, the teaching authorization (venia legendi) for mathematics is acquired. Moreover, the habilitation qualifies the holders to supervise doctoral candidates.
Since the department was founded, more than 50 young scientists have successfully completed their habilitation in the Department of Mathematics. Most of them subsequently accepted professorships or other permanent positions in higher education:
