Anita Schöbel President of the Association of European OR Societies
The Association of European Operational Research Societies (EURO) is the European section of the International Federation of Operational Research Societies (IFORS) and aims to promote the field of operations research throughout Europe. Currently, 32 national OR societies are represented in the association, including the German Society for Operations Research (GOR), whose president was Anita Schöbel in 2019 and 2020.
Operations Research (OR) is generally understood as the development and use of quantitative models and methods for decision support. It is characterized by interdisciplinary cooperation between mathematics, economics and computer science. It is an important research topic both in the Mathematics department (Optimization group) and at the Fraunhofer ITWM, which is headed by Anita Schöbel. OR methods are used in many projects, be it in traffic planning, logistics, healthcare or production or energy optimization.
The election by the EURO Council took already place on July 9, 2021. After one year as President-Elect, Anita Schöbel has now started her two-year term as President. In this function she will represent the EURO in external organizations and scientific societies as well as at public events. Her goal is to increase the visibility of operations research in science and industry and to show in how many areas business and society can benefit from the use of OR methods.
