To mark the 10th anniversary of the Applied Algebraic Topology Research Network (AATRN), the first joint offline workshop took place from 18 to 22 August. The workshop was held at the Institute for Mathematical and Statistical Innovation in Chicago, USA, and was, so to speak, realised geometrically. The topics of the workshop covered various aspects of topological data analysis, from tropical geometry to concrete applications in mathematical biology. Statistical applications in random topology were also given due attention.

Chiara Fend presented a current project of the Statistics Working Group entitled ‘A Persistent Homology Approach for Characterising Random Spatial Structures’ as part of the poster session and lightning talks for early career researchers. The focus of this project is currently on structures that can be modelled by random Laguerre tessellations.

Outside of the scientific programme, there was also plenty of time to network within the AATRN and explore Chicago together. For early career researchers, the Career Advice Round Tables and an Industry Panel were particularly interesting for learning about a wide variety of career paths.
