Abstract
Ground Vibrations: Instrumentation, Signals, and Applications of AI

Department of Geophysics, Universitas Padjadjaran, Indonesia
In young volcanic regions, where the land is formed by soft sedimentary rocks, the landscape topography is a main factor behind landslide events. Settlements and agricultural activities are indispensable due to the high fertility of the soil in such areas, which are highly prone to natural hazards. Catastrophic landslides are common and regularly occur throughout the Indonesian archipelago, which cause a periodic loss of human lives. The local community is largely unaware of their own geological condition. A continuous effort is required to build a system to inform the locals of the potential disasters that may happen, triggered by earthquakes and hydrogeological events. This talk presents an attempt to build a system that can be used as an early warning system (EWS) based on the monitoring of ground vibrations. Three vibration directions are used to determine the characteristics of the soil, in order to predict the vulnerability of an area to ground motion. The data analysis consists of the Horizontal to Vertical Signal Ratio (HVSR) and the spectral characterization, which can be used for categorization based on available AI algorithms.
